John Korir: The Fastest Marathon runner of 2025

A master class display from John Korir as he dominated and crashed the race course record, with a world leading time at the 44th edition of the Valencia Marathon held on Sunday (07) in Valencia, Spain.

The 29 year-old who won the Boston Marathon in April of this year, was on fire as he controlled the entire second half of the race with an intentional mind that moved him up to 8th place on the marathon all-time list.

Korir who seemed to be fading away and falling behind the lead group at the 15km mark, made a surprise move when they reached the halfway point as he pushed his body beyond the normal limit and emerging the top marathon runner of the year when he erased the old course record of 2:01.48, set two years ago by Ethiopia’s Sisay Lemma with a new course record time of 2:02.25 which is also his new personal best.

Korir finished 2025 as the third-fastest marathoner in the world behind Sabastian Sawe and Jacob Kiplimo.

Korir and his brother Wesley Korir, who also won in 2012 and became the first brothers to win Boston, was followed in second place by Denmark’s Amanal Petros, who also broke the National record with a time of 2:04.03 with Norway’s Awet Kibrab, making his debut of the distance more memorable by sealing the podium with a National Record time of 2:04.25.
