Mathew Kipkoech wins the Great Chepsaita Cross Country title

Two weeks after finishing second at the Cinque Mulini,Cross Country championships in Italy, Mathew Kipkoech was at it again, when he used his experience to secure the top ticket at the third edition of the Great Chepsaita Cross Country championships, held on Saturday (06) in Uasin Gishu County.

Kipkoech who finished third last year and knew the hilly and punishing course so well, used the advantage to secure his first ever victory over the distance when he separated the wheat from the chaff and choking off his opponents with refreshing kicks.

The 20 year-old who is trained by double Olympic 5000m champion, Beatrice Chebet’s coach Peter Bii, took the top honors in a time of 35:44.

“Last year, I was third in Chepsaita, and I went back to the drawing board with an aim of coming back and improving my performance. I just put in more effort in training and remained focused,” said Kipkoech.

Kipkoech who was the second runner-up in the first edition of this race in U20 category, was followed in second place by Cornelius Konor in 31:50 with Sammy Kapserem sealing the top three places in 31:51.
