Meru, December 21, 2025: Loice Chemnung completed a remarkable double at the Central Region BingwaFest in Meru on Saturday, December 20, 2025, winning both the women’s 10,000m and 5,000m races in dominant fashion.
The 28-year-old clocked 32:07.7 in the 10,000m and 15:22.4 in the 5,000m to cap a flawless day on the track.
She led the same trio to identical podium finishes in both races, with Maryam Lufti finishing second and Cynthia Chepng’eno taking third in the 10,000m, before repeating the exact order in the 5,000m.
Chemnung took home KES 550,000 for triumphing in the two races, KES 300,000 for winning the 10,000m, and KES 250,000 for winning the 5,000m. Lufti and Chepng’eno bagged KES 400,000 and KES 300,000, respectively.
Speaking after clinching the double, Chemnung thanked his coach, Thomas Potzinger, for encouraging her to go for the double.
I am happy to have won both the 10,000m and 5,000m races. Initially, I had planned to compete only in the 10,000m but my coach (Thomas Potzinger) encouraged me to run in the 5,000m as well. It was very encouraging seeing him guide me throughout both races at every corner of the field,” Chemnung said.
In the men’s 10,000m, Mathew Kipkoech clocked 28:44.2 to win ahead of Justus Lelinton (28.44.7) and Amos Langat (28:45.2) in a tightly contested race.
Mathew Kipsang clocked 13:47.2 to finish first as Shadrack Ngumbau (13:49.1) and Mavon Kipngetich (13:51.0) came home second and third, respectively.
Speaking after taking part in the 4x100m, where his team, Achievers, finished third behind Utawala A and KDF, Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, lauded BingwaFest as a perfect opportunity for sprinters.
“I am happy to be here for the Meru edition of BingwaFest and I appreciate it for my fellow sprinters. This was a significant development for this season, as we saw many better times posted by sprinters. As sprinters, we need more competitions so that we can better our times. This is a great initiative and urge more sprinters to continue working hard and showing up,” Onmanyala said.
Miriam Cherop (4:18.4) led Josephine Sembeyo (4:19.2) and Vivian Chebet (4:19.4) to the podium in the women’s 1,500m as Dominic Bargentuny (3:40.4) won the men’s race followed by Ng’eno Kipngetich (3:41.1) and Mathew Kipsang (3:41.8).
Olympian Milcent Ndoro had a good outing as well, winning both the 100m and 400m races. In the 100m, she clocked 11.6 seconds to claim gold ahead of Neviah Michira (12.2) and Jane Mirigo (12.3).
