The Los Angeles Lakers announced that the trade to acquire Charlotte Hornets big man Mark Williams has been rescinded. The trade, which was widely seen as a massive win for the Lakers who had the intention of pairing Williams with newly acquired superstar Luka Doncic, won’t go through due to what the Lakers are saying is a “failure to satisfy a condition of the trade” on the Hornets’ part.
The Lakers had traded Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a first-round swap in 2030 and an unprotected first-round pick in 2031 to the Hornets in exchange for Williams, but it sounds as though there was an issue along the way that will nullify this deal and return all players and picks to their original teams.
It’s not exactly clear what the reason is for this yet, but it could be a failed physical by Williams, who has played just 23 games this year due to a foot injury. However, he played in each of Charlotte’s last three games, so it’s difficult to pinpoint that as the issue.
With this awkward reversal, it will be like this trade never happened, sending Knecht, Reddish and the draft capital back to the Lakers.
CBS Sports will continue to update this as more information becomes available.
