The summer of 2026 is supposed to be a football spectacle for Mexico. At the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mexico, together with Canada and the United States, is one of the host countries, and El Tri has ambitious goals, especially after being eliminated at the group stage of the 2022 World Cup. After winning the Gold Cup and the Concacaf Nations League in 2025, the national team has both momentum and talent. One standout talent is Gilberto Mora, who at 17 is already a big part of the team.

At the age of 16, the playmaker, who plays his club football for Tijuana, made his debut for the national team, breaking Armando Manzo’s record to become the youngest player in the history of the Mexican national team. It underlines his qualities that he didn’t make his debut in a friendly but started in the quarterfinal of the Gold Cup against Saudi Arabia (2-0). But that’s not enough. In the semifinal against Honduras (1-0), the playmaker assisted Raúl Jiménez’s winning goal, becoming the youngest player to be directly involved in a goal in his country’s history.

Talents Calendar Day 8: Gilberto Mora

It is expected that the teenager will play a significant role for his country at the World Cup next year. Indeed, at 17, he will have to carry the expectations of an entire nation on his shoulders. But it isn’t like the young star isn’t familiar with that situation. About 18 months ago, he made his Liga MX debut and has since played 45 games for the first team. In those games, he has managed eight goals and two assists. Not surprisingly, he is the youngest player to ever feature for his club and the youngest goalscorer in league history.

“Gilberto Mora is far more than just another promising teenager playing in Liga MX,” Transfermarkt Area Manager Mexico Osvaldo Camacho said. “At just 17, he already carries the creative load of a first division side and has to deal with pressure that goes far beyond that of normal youth development. As an attacking midfielder, who can play as a striker, winger or central, Mora is a modern playmaker with a low center of gravity that helps him to be agile in small spaces where he always has the vision for his teammates and can use his dribbling and combination play to break through defensive lines.”

Gilberto Mora scouted by European clubs

Mora’s development has been quicker than is usually the case for 17-year-olds. At 16, he was valued at €3m and was briefly the most valuable player in his age group. His market value has now increased to €4m, and the trend is for it to keep rising, especially as there is significant interest from Europe. Mora has since confirmed what is obvious to most. “Several top clubs have contacted me already. But I am focused on playing football and what I am doing on the pitch. Everything else will come by itself.”

Mexico expert Camacho is sure that a move to Europe is only a question of time. “His profile fits exactly what top clubs want,” Camacho said. “He is a creative midfielder who can hang on to the ball under pressure and always seeks to play the decisive ball. Mora’s positional flexibility, his maturity on the ball, and his finishing make him a promising long-term investment for clubs looking for talent in the Americas before they become too expensive.”

Although cheap is relative, Tijuana are already asking for around $30m (€26m), and that is just for a percentage of the transfer rights. If his development continues, he could become the most expensive Mexican player in history. That record was set by Hirving Lozano, who in 2019 joined Napoli from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth €50m. What would help is a good World Cup in Mexico; all eyes will undoubtedly be on Mora.

From December 1 to 24, we introduce new players from different countries born in 2008 and 2009. Area managers, users, and data scouts come into play as experts throughout the series. You can follow all those players by adding them to your TM watchlist.
